I don't think it's survivorship bias, either. But what in particular is to blame? Lead-free solder? Low-quality capacitors? Cheap PCB's? I know 'it's cheap' is a good catch-all explanation.even for stuff that's.pretty expensive. Hell, and microwaves and other certain appliances. Seems closer to five for TV's and monitors. Meanwhile, a modern piece of electronics can't seem to last ten years. Even cheap stuff from the 70's and 80's seems like it holds up, so long as it doesn't get wet, have batteries leak in it, ect.

What makes old electronics so bulletproof, anyway? At least, it seems like they are.
